History

Actaris has a distinguished track record in pioneering new technologies, successfully capitalising on its history of innovation and quality over the years to stay ahead in the global metering market.

A brief summary of the company's most significant technological developments and international acquisitions will give you an idea of the group's capacity to predict, conceive and manufacture innovative metering products and systems that meet the needs of customers throughout the world.

Chamon and Nicolas, join forces to set up a workshop for producing gas meters in France.

the workshop gains a new dimension when it is restructured as the Compagnie des Compteurs. This has the unique advantage that its Board of Directors is composed of the Presidents of the majority of gas distributors that subsequently acquire water and electricity concessions. As a natural consequence, the Compagnie des Compteurs extends its manufacturing range to include water and electricity meters. Right from the beginning of this period, there are important acquisitions, particularly in Belgium and Holland. (Meterfabriek).

Frager develops a volumetric type of water meter that progressively replaces competing, speed -based meters that are less accurate and not very efficient at very low flow rates. Produced by the Compagnie des Compteurs from 1888, this meter, with the advantage of exceptional accuracy, has been a success for more than 40 years.

Electricity meter sales increase rapidly at a rate of 50% p.a., thanks to the general
                              expansion of electric lighting.

The company develops and patents a prepayment gas meter for sale in France and the Benelux countries.
At the same time, with the cost price of water rising owing to hygiene standard requirements, the need for more precise metering demonstrates the supremacy of Frager's volume meter.

The compagnie des Compteurs begins designing a new gas meter, the "Duplex", which will be patented in all countries.
This year also sees the launch of the first ACT1 electricity meter in the French market. Until the 1980s, all electricity meters produced will be based on its electromechanical principle.

The Compagnie des Compteurs trademarks the Duplex. A major industrial and commercial success, the Duplex range will dominate the French market for more than 50 years. As a result of this success, the company grants licenses to its competitors.

Invention of the "Stella" water meter, with a rotary piston.

Invention of the "Naïade" water meter. The rotary piston is simplified by introducing a "U" form.

Invention and development of ripple control systems. The " Actadis " process of transmitting signals across the electricity distribution networks starts to spread, especially in the UK.

Mass production of the first dry gas meter, Rex A, the forerunner of Gallus.

1954, Gallus

Production in France of a modern gas meter, the Gallus, which will benefit from numerous modifications over time, making it more and more efficient.

Mass production of A3C1 type electricity meters starts. Manufacture of AIT300 ripple control
                    receivers.

                             1966, AC3 1

A new factory is built in Milan (Italy).

Overseas businesses have to adapt to the growth of the world's gas markets: a factory is built at Dordrecht (Netherlands) and a branch is established in Vienna, Austria, called Danubia.

The Compagnie des Compteurs takes part in the international exhibition in Paris, winning 2 major prizes and a gold medal. Thirteen awards are also presented to staff working in the electrical field.

1903, Duplex

The company has now established 16 factories in Europe in order to manufacture products where it
                    sells them.

                 1911, Stella
